Washing the Cover:

TIP: The Essential cover is made with a Viscose layer which may develop an odor if allowed to remain damp (like a wool sweater). To refresh, add 1/2 cup baking soda to the wash.

Washing the core:

• For the really big mess or just for seasonal cleaning, the core can be washed whenever needed.
• Wash in the shower with soap & cool water or rinse outside with a hose.
• Shake excess water out of core and stand-up to dry.
• Place in well ventilated area for faster drying.
• Avoid drying in direct sunlight and do not use heating elements to speed the drying process.

Do I need to add anything to my Newton mattress?

Your Newton mattress consists of the Wovenaire® core material covered by a viscose encasement and the single-layer removable outer cover. While your Newton mattress is the perfect sleep surface for your baby, you may consider adding some other items to create the ultimate sleep environment (and have backups in the linen closet).

Choosing a breathable mattress is important for your baby’s safety and comfort. Breathable mattresses have more air flow, which helps regulate a baby’s temperature so they don’t overheat.

This extra airflow also means reduced risk of suffocation. If your baby flips over onto their stomach while sleeping and is unable to flip back, they can breathe right through the mattress.

Breathable mattresses are also antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, and dust-mite-resistant.

When choosing a crib mattress, look for one that’s firm, breathable, fits snugly in your chosen crib, and features safety certifications like GREENGUARD Gold.

There are many types of mattresses available, ranging from foam and innerspring models to hybrid mattresses made of several different materials. There are benefits to each type, depending on your priorities. Different crib mattresses offer different features as well.

For instance, some mattresses are lightweight, which can make it easier to change the sheets. Others are waterproof, great for spit-ups and accidents, and still others are dual-sided, providing a firm side for babies and a slightly softer side for toddlers.

A safe crib mattress must be firm, flat, and fit snugly in your crib. To test firmness, push down on the mattress and ensure it snaps back up immediately and doesn’t leave an indentation. As for snugness, you shouldn’t be able to fit more than two fingers between any side of the crib and the mattress.

It’s important to purchase your mattress new, as used mattresses may lose their firmness or have other unknown damage that could be dangerous.

Standard crib mattress sizes are regulated to meet a minimum sizing of 27 1/4" x 51 5/8" and not thicker than 6 inches. Standard crib sizes, while also regulated, can vary a bit based on construction. If a crib is labeled as a standard crib, Newton Crib Mattresses will fit nice and snugly inside.

At first blush, the Essential Crib Mattress seems to be very similar to the Original Crib Mattress, as both mattresses are firm, breathable, and washable from cover to core. However, the Essential Crib Mattress is 1.5” thinner, at 4” wide as opposed to 5.5” wide.

The Essential Crib Mattress also features a thinner, soft eyelet removable cover, instead of a thicker dual-layered cover as is on the Original Crib Mattress.

Because it’s slim, the Essential Crib Mattress is best for children newborn to three years, whereas the thicker Original can be used up to four years old.
